The watchmen have a charge to warn, to watch for enemies, to sound the alarm when danger approaches. Their voices have to proclaim the Name of the Creator and His Torah from their positions on the walls of the cities. Whether they know anyone is listening or not, they still have to be vigilant and fulfill their role as watchmen of Yahuah Elohim and no matter how late the hour, there will always be someone who is awake and hears the warnings. Here are some of the scriptures about Watchmen -
Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 52: 5, 6 “And now, what have I here,” declares Yahuah, “that My people are taken away for naught? Those who rule over them make them wail,” declares Yahuah, “and My Name is despised all day continually. Therefore My people shall know My Name in that day, for I am the One who is speaking, See it is I”.
7, 8 How pleasant upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings good news, who proclaims deliverance, who says to Tsiyon, “Your Elohim reigns!” The voice of your watchmen! They shall lift up their voices, together they shout for joy, because eye to eye they see the return of Yahuah to Tsiyon.
9, 10 Break forth into joy, sing together, you waste places of Yerushalayim! For Yahuah shall comfort His people, He shall redeem Yerushalayim. Yahuah shall lay bare His set-
In verse 5 we ignore or despise His Name at our peril. Verses 6, 7 give a promise of His people knowing His Name and that time is NOW. The verses 8 to 10, I believe are some of the most awesome in scripture, with the words joy, singing, comfort, redeem, deliverance, watchmen shouting for joy, and the stunning picture of Yahuah laying bare His arm (strength) before all the nations.
Yeshayahu 62: 6, 7 I have set watchmen on your walls, O Yerushalayim, all the day and all the night, continually, who are not silent. You who remember Yahuah, give yourselves no rest, and give Him no rest till He establishes and till He makes Yerushalayim a praise in the earth.
8, 9 Yahuah has sworn by His right hand and by the arm of His strength, "No more do I give your grain to be food for your enemies, nor do sons of the foreigner drink your new wine, for which you have laboured but those gathering it shall eat it, and praise Yahuah. And those collecting it shall drink it in My set-
The deliverance of His people! To be numbered among His people we must follow His Torah or Instructions and remove ourselves from any man-
Yirmeyhahu (Jeremiah) 31: 6, 7 For there shall be a day when the watchmen cry on Mount Ephrayim, ‘Arise, and let us go up to Tsiyon, to Yahuah our Elohim’. For thus said Yahuah, "Sing with gladness for Ya'acob, and shout among the chief of the nations. Cry out, give praise and say 'O Yahuah save Your people, the remnant of Yisrael!'
Yehezqel (Ezekiel) 3: 16 -
These verses set out the responsibility of the individual to heed the voice of the watchman who is following the instructions of Yahuah Elohim, also the responsibility of the watchman to actually cry out a warning to the people when danger approaches.
And in Tehillim (Psalms) 127: 1 If Yahuah does not build the house, its builders have laboured in vain. If Yahuah does not guard the city, the watchman has stayed awake in vain.
The watchmen are only effective in guarding the city if they are doing the work for Yahuah and under His direction. If they are "doing their own thing" and following their traditions instead of His Word, they are wasting their time.
Yeshayahu 56: 10 -
These verses are a strong warning to watchmen/shepherds today who "eat, drink and be merry" when they should be watching for wolves creeping in among the flock. Watchmen/shepherds who are described in these verses (dumb, dreaming, slumbering on the job, greedy, willful, drunkards), surely cannot believe that a day of reckoning will come or they would be paralysed with fear!
The following are scriptures from Yirmeyahu 6 where the prophet is speaking the words of Yahuah to the people -
Yirmeyahu 6: 13,14 "For from the least of them even to the greatest of them, they are all greedy for gain. And from the prophet even to the priest, all act falsely. And they heal the breach of My people slightly, saying, 'Peace, peace," when there is no peace.
Again we have those who should be fulfilling their roles as prophets and priests all letting the people down, lying about peace, feeling no shame but pride in their sinfulness. Then in Verses 16 and 17 we see open defiance of the words and direction of Yahuah. The "old paths" are His ways, the Torah or Instructions from our Creator Himself.
This again is the prophet speaking the words of Yahuah to the people -
Yirmeyahu 31: 6 -
Those three verses are leading up to this wonderful promise of Yahuah -
Verse 31 "See the days are coming", declares Yahuah, "when I shall make a new covenant with the house of Yisrael and with the house of Yahudah, not like the covenant I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Mitsrayim, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them", declares Yahuah, "for this is the covenant I shall make with the house of Yisrael after those days", declares Yahuah: “I shall put My Torah in their inward parts, and write it on their hearts. And I shall be their Elohim and they shall be My people".
The promise of a wonderful deliverance from our Elohim to those who love and obey Him, the people who are listening for the voice of the watchmen, those who are alert to their Master's voice. This was "the promise of the Father" declared by Yahusha before He left His followers to return to His Father and it was manifest in the coming of the Ruach ha Qodesh (Holy Spirit) on Shavuot (Pentecost) when the Torah of Yahuah was written by His hand on the hearts of the believers. (Acts chapters 1 and 2)
Yehezqel 33: 1 And the word of Yahuah came to me, saying,
5, 6 He heard the sound of the ram's horn, but he did not take warning, his blood is on himself. But he who takes warning shall deliver his being. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and shall not blow the ram's horn, and the people shall not be warned, and the sword comes and takes any being from among them, he is taken away in his crookedness, and his blood I require at the watchman's hand'."
The alert watchman described here does all that he can to rouse the people to coming danger, but if they do nothing and ignore the warnings, their blood is on their own heads. But if the watchman sees the coming danger and does nothing, then he is guilty of negligence leading to their deaths.
